DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CITIZEN JOURNALIST AND JOURNALIST

Journalism is a profession carried out by trained journalists. It involves gathering of news for people’s consumption and processing the news through mass media.  Journalism entails gathering of news worthy stories for print and electronic media either to educate, entertain, inform or change the opinion already formed towards an issue.
Traditional journalists are journalists that are professionally trained to carry out specific duties as regard the work of journalism profession, they understand the ethics of journalism that guide the profession. Journalist are the one recognized by the law who also are acquainted with technical know how knowledge through the training he has received.
Citizen journalism, popularly refers to as “participatory”, “guerrilla”, “casual” or street journalism is a new trend by which the public plays an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information, through modern day technology though they also provide reliable, accurate and relevant information.  The idea behind citizen journalism is that people who are not professionally trained can use the tools of modern technology and global distribution of the Internet to create argument or fact. Check media on their own or in collaboration with others.  A citizen journalist might write local event on the blog or in an online forum or could fact-check a newspaper article from the mainstream media and point out factual errors or biels on once blog, or snap a digital photo of a newsworthy event in once area and send it online or might videotape an event and upload it on a site as YouTube.
According to Dan Gillmor, centre for citizen media, 2005, he argued that citizen journalists are products of civic republicanism which emphasis that participation and expressing oneself in public, on private issues, teaches responsibility and gives them the skill to address more complex issues.  Their role is to produce a better-informed citizenry by expanding the information pool and distributing production.
